Here in Scotland we are very lucky to have some of the worlds best produce, food and drink, much of which is right on our doorstep here in the North East.
North Sea Haddock, River Spey Salmon, Aberdeen Beef, Fruit and vegetables all produced within a stones throw of our door.
We strive to recognise and promote our source of quality food and drink through our menu’s and indeed our Garden Centre. Over the next few weeks we wish to share these with you through a series of blog posts, giving you an insight into our suppliers and indeed our menus and how their produce is used by us.
Barra Berries is very much part of the Barra Castle estate, a family business on the outskirts of Oldmeldrum and just 3 and a half miles from Inverurie; owned and managed by David & Sarah Stephen, together the family produce and sell Raspberries, Strawberries, Blackberries and Blueberries all within their poly tunnels with a helping hand from the sunshine and natures pollinators. When in season we use the produce in a variety of ways, fresh cream strawberry tarts, mixed fresh fruit bowls served with natural yoghurt and homemade jam, my taste buds are tingling whilst I write this!
Another award winning producer and supplier is located in the very same town as the Garden Centre; Ola Oils was established in 2008, another family run business, Jon and Connie Sorrie, along with their Son, Daughter and their respective partners manage the production and sales of Ola which has come a long way since launching the Scottish alternative to Olive Oil. We use Infused Rapeseed Oils, Salad Dressings, Oatcakes and One of my favourites, Chilli Jam in variety of ways.
Two producer / suppliers, right next door, not only supporting local economy but cutting the carbon footprint of our produce that we prepare and serve to our customers, of this we are very proud and wish to share more with you over the coming weeks.
